For those people who are new to requesting a print job, we’ve set out some pointers regarding how to send a document to a printing firm in preparation for printing. It may sound straightforward, but here are a few points to remember to ensure the printer has all the information they need to create the best document for your budget:
• Most printing firms will be happy to receive the document as a PDF. This means you can either send the PDF as an email attachment or alternatively you could save the document to a memory stick which you can take with you to the printers. It’s usually best to keep the size of the file to under 10mb, if it is larger than this you may need to speak to the printer to find out the best way of sending the document.
• Be practical about how many copies you will need of your document. If you are preparing leaflets for a mailshot, you may need to target a specific location, so be sure to identify the number of houses you wish to deliver leaflets to so that you are not left with piles of flyers which can’t be delivered anywhere else.
• Find out from the printer what the best thickness of paper will be for your item. Heavier, or thicker, paper will give a higher quality finish, but you will need to ensure the cost will stay within budget.
• It’s often a good idea to speak to the printer about the project before you make any final decisions. For example, an experienced printer could help you to define a target audience and may also be able to suggest other print runs which could supplement your project and could support your long term marketing plan.
